This simple but awesome recorder comes with a 1TB hard disk and a built in digital tuner which allows the unit to directly record NTSC, ATSC and QAM signals directly from the Antenna or cable coaxial. It is the most advanced model of the 53x series, since the other units have smaller storage capacity featuring 320Gb and 500 Gb hard disks.
Did you ever have the chance to use a VCR? Well, this is the DVD recorder equivalent. Simple recording for the next generation. If all you ask from your recorder is to simply record your favorite program , then you will find the Magnavox HDD so easy to use, that it will remind you those super simple – one button – VCR recorders.
If you are even slightly familiar with a dvd recorder, installing this unit is a no brainer. I found this recorder easy to use , and I did not have to go though all the manual to figure out how to use most of its features. The built in hard disk makes the recording procedure even easier since you can record your program directly to the hard disk and there is no need for a DVD disk. However on the few occasions that I had to read instructions from the manual , I found it slightly confusing and not so well organized.
At some sections I started to think that maybe this manual was actually written for a different recorder! Apparently that’s not that case, its just not well written. In the end It took me some extra time to discover how to use some features but finally I managed to figure out every function and get the recorder in a perfect working order.
Magnavox HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner, 1TB
Of course you have the option to archive your programs to a dvd disk if you want to. You have the option to either burn your program directly to a dvd , or store it first on the hard disk and then burn it on a dvd later whenever you feel like it. I have been using mostly cheap dvd disks and so far I have never had any problem with the dvd burner. Even so I would advice you to use +R DVD disks, just to make sure that you can play them in any unit if you have to. What I really like is that both the hard disk and the dvd are very easily replaceable. Although 1TB of hard disk recording space is more than enough for me, I can upgrade this little monster whenever I want to very ease.
I found out that even when the unit has finished recording you must give it 2 minutes to really finish the whole recording procedure. Apparently even if the recording is over, the recorder is still writing information on the disk and should not be interrupted otherwise you could lose all the data of the current recording as I regretfully find out. Something similar also happens when you are programming the recorder. If you want to record a program you should not wait until the last minute . Programming the unit at least 5 minutes before the program that you wish to record begins, insures that the device will have enough time to start the recording on time.
I am very happy with the recording quality, I found the picture to be excellent without any pixilation . I did not have the opportunity to test it on a really wide screen though, my tv unit is 32 inches.
All in all if you ever had a VCR and loved its simplicity, you will absolutely love the Magnavox which is very simple to program and use while at the same time provides ample hard disk space for super easy effortless recording.
